Rose Buchanan, Writer
Rose Buchanan is from Cape Town, South Africa studied masters of architecture at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in Port Elizabeth, South Africa.
Rose worked for 3 years for an architectural and urban design company in Port Elizabeth and registered as a professional architect. During that time Rose realised that while she loved architecture and design, she needed to have a broader and more environmental focus.
I had no idea what landscape was and stumbled upon the term during an office meeting. After googling it Rose discovered the website www.Iwanttobealandscapearchitect.com and immediately knew that that was what she wanted to do.

Rose packed up her life and moved to Cape Town in 2012 to study a Masters Landscape Architecture at the University of Cape Town where she graduated in 2013 with the top thesis dissertation.
Rose’s dissertation focussed on landscape urbanism, and used the Baakens River in Port Elizabeth as an example of how urban, social and natural processes can work together to create a positive urban landscape.
Rose is still very passionate about river rehabilitation and have since had the opportunity in Cape Town to be involved in local river projects which address the relationship between the city and its natural environment.
Rose has recently started her own landscape design company “Rose Buchanan Landscape Design” which for now focusses on smaller gardens and landscape plans, but will hopefully expand to greater landscape architectural projects in the future. You can follow Rose Buchanan Landscape Design on Facebook.
I started writing for Landscape Architects Network to satisfy a love for writing and research while being able to stay up to date with the latest projects and theories.
When it comes to Landscape Architecture Rose says:
“To me landscape architecture is the one profession that can truly save the world. We provide landscape design solutions which tackle the challenges of the future, from food security, climate change, and sustainable infrastructure, to landscape regeneration and preservation. Landscape architecture is the understanding of the complex nature of a site: the dynamic relationship between the natural and the built environment and the overlaying of the cultural context”.
We love that Rose decided and continues to be part of the LAN Team. She has contributed many top articles and is a we look forward to to see what more she brings to the table as LAN develops as a website and Rose develops as a writer.
